Passionate attraction is the cosmic glue that binds lovers, atoms, molecules, star systems, galaxies and universes together. It is Creation in love with itself. Science has sought to eliminate the descriptors of consciousness as outmoded poetic relics, or, following Dr. Freud, as the childishly regressive religious personifications of efficient forces—gravity, electromagnetism, strong and weak nuclear—that can and must be analyzed in purely mechanical terms; the better to grasp and twist nature for purely human ends. In the end, however, it is the poets and children whose sense of things is closest to the truth. Stories, not equations, are the key.
